Match Report | Division 1 Yarmouth II 0 Broadland 2 In extreme wintery and blustery conditions Yarmouth fought hard to prevent Broadland from running up a cricket score. Broadland one of the contenders for the league title went all out from the start, dominating play from the initial push back, until the final whistle. Yarmouth somehow survived several penalty corner scares early on and had a number of promising attacks themselves, but eventually Broadland got the break their attack deserved, when Nikki Baker’s goal bound attempt was stopped by a foot on the line. Broadland’s captain Sophie White’s penalty corner strike was blocked by Julie Mercer in the Yarmouth goal, the ball falling invitingly to Broadland’s Abi Dennison, who skilfully placed the ball through a sea of legs, for the opener. Yarmouth responded well, but again when Broadland picked up the pace of the game, looked vulnerable at the back. A variety of comical missed opportunities came and went before Broadland eventually found the home team’s net again., Karly Fox getting in a firm strike when Carolyn Duthie set her up at yet another penalty corner. Broadland continued to dominate possession. Their midfield of Broadland’s star player Tessa Hewett, Wendy and her daughter Amelia Anema, together with Dennison broke down almost every Yarmouth attempt to build an attack and even if they did manage to invade the Broadland half, defenders Nat Brooks, Lorna Cousins and White were too solid and strong and quickly powered the ball forward again. Broadland’s goalkeeper Emma Piddock was rarely troubled and dealt effectively when called on as last defender. Dennison looking to put the result beyond doubt saw her well-crafted attempt strike the base of the post and spiral along the goal line and out beyond the far post. Had it not been for Yarmouth’s outstanding sweeper Penny Le’ze’ making numerous last minute interventions to keep the score respectable, Broadland might have indeed run up a cricket score. |
