Saturday 17thOctober 2020 East Women’s Hockey League Division 2 (North East) Ipswich II 6 Broadland 1 Broadland made a positive start against league leaders Ipswich 2s, with some confident passing. An early corner won by Broadland’s Nikki broke down and from then on, the visitors had to demonstrate their defensive qualities with some excellent marking and decisive tackling by Catherine Brewster and Kelly Allen. Broadland’s keeper Jen Crawford made a great save from an Ipswich reverse stick shot and then made another fantastic save stretching across her goal but she was unfortunately unable to stop the follow up shot for the first Ipswich goal of the game. Broadland rallied and had some good attacks, with Broadland’s star player Helen Kelly showing great stick skills in midfield. Abi Dennison made a super interception at the edge of the home team’s circle and took a shot which was well saved by the Ipswich keeper. Broadland however, conceded a second goal just before the break. Broadland still felt positive going into the second half. Ipswich, however came out strongly in the second half and scored two goals in quick succession to tighten their grip on the game Hattie Hobart made a super save on the line at a penalty corner but an infringement which prevented a goal lead to a penalty stroke which was easily converted for the home sides fifth goal of the game. Broadland, never a team to give up, pulled a goal back when Jenny Whiting set up Abi Dennison who in turn found Natasha Blyth. who powered the ball across the circle to Lydia Lawrence, in her favourite position on the left post who slot in a consolation but well-deserved goal for the visitors.
